A growing number of people are adopting farm animals as companions to directly help victims of "food animal" production. If treated with respect and kindness, the largest pig will roll over for a belly rub with a touch of your hand. After interacting with farm animals, most people begin to recognize the similarities between a pig and a dog, not the differences, and begin to extend compassion to farm animals too.
Like allcreatures, cattle, pigs, chickens and other farm animals are intelligent, social, sentient beings - yet every day, billions of farm animals suffer fear, pain, and neglect at factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses across the country. Opening your heart, and home, to farm animals directly saves a suffering "veal" calf or "downer" pig - and every person who meets your farm animal friends will learn why it is so important to stop eating animals and animal by-products.
Anyone with a kind heart can care for farm animals - but you will need to do a lot of self-educating and training. Information available from farm and feed supply stores, agricultural agents, and even your local farm animal veterinarian may be useful, but these resources generally view farm animals as "food products" and some of the information may be misleading or not applicable. Farm Sanctuary's animal care information is provided to help the farm animal care "beginner" get through the maze of "livestock and poultry" information - and do what is best for the animal.
